Project Description

Co-creating Safety

This is a comprehensive course that provides an evidence-based, client-centred framework for promoting opportunity and safety when working with service users.

The course emphasises that developing a shared understanding of risk and safety requires a broad understanding of diverse values and concerns that inform the meaning and nature of ‘risk’ and ‘safety’ from the perspectives of clients, practitioners and other key stakeholders.

Informed by contemporary evidence, participants will learn relevant and practical approaches to co-creating safety in collaboration with clients.

Delivered in four half day workshops or two whole day workshops, we commence with exploring the concept of ‘shared understanding’ – learning the key relevant factors impacting the client and their support system when navigating safety concerns. This is then followed by a framework for developing ‘shared strategies’ that enhance safety and promote opportunities for growth.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • assess both short-term and long-term risk (relevant to the client and their situation)
  • integrate internationally recognised ISO 31000 Risk Management principles into practical Recovery-oriented working with clients
  • appreciate the roles of strengths, vulnerabilities, red flags and safety needs when working collaboratively with clients
  • develop evidence- based collaborative Recovery plans that will enhance safety
  • conduct a ‘short-term risk assessment’ in collaboration with a client
  • engage in proactive care planning that both promotes opportunities for well-being outcomes and reduces risk of harm
  • engage in ‘therapeutic risk taking’ in collaboration with clients, balancing ‘dignity of risk’ and ‘duty of care’ considerations
Design

The core training can be supported by ongoing, optional Communities of Practice sessions:

  • hour long, online sessions
  • facilitating ‘learning into practice’
  • addressing key challenges related to risk and safety
  • working through scenarios relevant to the learnings from the core training.
